Propane gas detecors for your safety
Propane gas is a hydrocarbon gas that is used wherever energy is needed regardless of location. Whether in the form of LPG, for operating soldering and welding equipment or for camping – propane is widely used.
However, few people realise how dangerous this highly flammable gas can be. In many situations, it is even vital to be able to determine the exact propane concentration in air using propane gas measuring devices.
What makes propane gas so dangerous
Like natural gas, propane gas is naturally colourless and odorless. However, to ensure that a leak cannot go unnoticed, producers mix a foul-smelling substance into the gas. This odour is similar to the smell of rotten eggs and is what we colloquially refer to as the smell of gas.
The dangerous thing about propane is that in its gaseous state it is heavier than air. If it is released from an open valve or a leak, it always concentrates at the lowest accessible point. In outdoor areas, this can be ditches, holes or sewers. Indoors, however, it is usually the cellar.
If the gas concentration in air reaches the LEL the mixture can be ignited by a spark generated by a light switch, a hot surface or a flame. In addition, propane has a narcotic effect in high doses and in the worst case can cause asphyxiation. Propane gas detectrors generate an alarm long before a dangerous concentration is reached.
What you should bear in mind when handling propane cylinders
- The storage of a spare bottle is only permitted in a separate room.
- Store the bottle in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Always check all fittings and hoses for leaks using a leak detector.
- Never use gas hoses beyond the best-before date printed on them, up to a maximum of 8 years.
- Ensure that the specified temperature and pressure limits are observed.
- Never store gas cylinders in a cellar without gas monitoring. As propane is heavier than air, the gas will fill the room in the event of a leak and become a safety risk.
- Ideal storage locations are well-ventilated terraces, balconies, garden sheds and garages, from where the gas can volatilise if necessary.
- In order to be able to measure leaking propane, a gas detector should be available in the vicinity of the storage location.
- Private users may only store one propane cylinder indoors as a service cylinder.
Measure propane with measurement technology from Compur
The presence of flammable and potentially explosive gases in the atmosphere poses a considerable risk. All it takes is a glance at the accident statistics from insurers. Propane gas detectors from Compur, such as the Statox product family enable reliable detection of propane gas.
