Compur SDM-72 – Fast and easy detection of iron particles in grease

Iron in grease means wear and tear

Over time, abrasion in the form of iron particles accumulates in heavily used lubricating grease. The proportion of iron in the lubricating medium provides information about the quality of the lubrication and whether the medium needs to be changed.

To measure the iron content, a sample of the fat is simply placed in the measuring cuvette using a spatula. This is then inserted into the measuring chamber of the device.

The iron content is given in ppm (mass). Measures are recommended above a certain concentration.

Interpretation of measurement results

Concentration Measure to be taken
< 500 ppm None, normal operation
500 – 1000 ppm Renew lubrication, measurement after 1 month
> 1000 ppm Improve system, shorter measurement intervals
